Save Soil Seychelles

Our Soil, our Sey

Save Soil Seychelles

Save Soil Seychelles is a local campaign in support of the global #SaveSoil movement, working to protect and regenerate soil health across the islands.
Together with local partners, youth, and everyday citizens, we restore life from the ground up.

Seychelles Geography

Seychelles is a group of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean with different types of soil, including rocky and sandy areas.
This diversity means each area requires different care to maintain soil health.

What’s Happening to Our Soil

Climate change is making it worse

Storms, floods, and droughts happen more often. Healthy soil helps protect us from these changes by holding water and supporting strong plants.

Salt is ruining Seychelles farmlands

Rising seas and storms bring saltwater into coastal farms. This makes it hard to grow crops like tomatoes and chillies.

Seychelles farmlands are losing nutrients

Seychelles has very little farming land, and much of it is losing its natural fertility. Without healthy soil, crops don’t grow well.

Nature is under threat

Many of our rare plants and animals depend on healthy land. When soil is lost or damaged, their homes disappear.

Soil is washing away

On steep hillsides, rain is washing soil into rivers and the sea. This damages farmland and hurts coral reefs and wetlands.

Key Statistics

3.4%

Only 3.4% of Seychelles’ land is used as agricultural land

0.3%

Just 0.3% of the total land area is classified as arable

13.%
